Volumetric weight explained: shipping shoes with or without the box
Agents bill the higher of your parcel's real weight and its volumetric weight. For light, bulky things like sneakers in their box, that can mean paying for air. Here is how it's calculated, and what the box actually added at each agent in September 2026.

The formula
volumetric weight (kg) = length × width × height (cm) ÷ divisor
Common divisors are 5000 and 6000. Some lines use a higher one, or bill by real weight only, which is kinder to bulky parcels. The line bills whichever is higher: the scale weight or the volumetric weight, and many lines round up to the next 100 or 500 g. That's why the same box can cost very different amounts at different agents.
Worked example: one pair of sneakers
- Box: 36 × 24 × 14 cm = 12,096 cm³
- ÷ 6000 = 2.02 kg volumetric; ÷ 5000 = 2.42 kg
- Real weight: about 1.5 kg in the box, 1.1 kg without it
On a ÷5000 line you would pay for 2.42 kg while the shoes weigh 1.5 kg. Remove the box and every line bills the real weight only.

Cheapest agent for shipping shoes (September 2026)
The same pair to Poland, in its box (1.5 kg, 36×24×14 cm) and without it (1.1 kg, no box size), cheapest line within 30 days at each agent. Cheapest with the box: RizzitGo. “Billed weight” is what the agent charged for. Where it is above 1.5 kg, the line used volumetric weight or rounded up. The box also adds real weight, and the cheapest line can differ between the two cases, so the extra cost isn't only about volume.
How to pay for less air
- Remove shoe boxes. Many agents offer to throw the box away before shipping (sometimes for a small fee). Keep it only if you need it.
- Compress clothes. Hoodies and jackets pack much smaller vacuum-sealed; ask for it when you submit the parcel if the agent offers it.
- Pick the line, not just the agent. Lines with a higher divisor, or ones billed by real weight only, are cheaper for bulky parcels. The calculator shows every line with your box size.

How these prices were checked
repmatic asked each agent's own shipping calculator on 29 September 2026. Prices are for a parcel paid from the agent's balance, so they include the agent's per-parcel fees (like a customs declaration fee) but not card or PayPal fees. Lines that take longer than 30 days are listed separately, because the cheapest line is often a sea or rail line that takes months. The boxed pair was quoted with its box size; the pair without a box by weight only.
Agents change prices and lines every few weeks, and the warehouse weighs your real parcel, so treat these as estimates. When an agent shows no price, its calculator didn't return one for this parcel when we checked; it doesn't mean the agent can't ship there.
